Get Noticed (and hired!) With These Résumé Tips

The perfect position in your field just opened up! You have the experience, and you know you’re the person for the job. But what about your resume? Maybe it needs a little updating, to be revamped entirely, or somewhere in between. Either way, these tips are sure to help you put your best foot forward and impress hiring managers.

Start with the basics:

It goes without saying that spelling, grammar and punctuation should be checked. You want your potential employer to notice your outstanding skills and achievements and not be distracted by errors.

Keep it simple:

Opt for a clean, classic and understated template. Too many fonts and colors can sometimes be overwhelming. Also, use fonts that will look great on nearly any computer. Arial, Times Roman and Helvetica work most often.

Content is key:

Don’t be afraid to highlight your accomplishments! Merely describing your job duties isn’t always enough to make you stand out in a crowd. Tell them what makes you the best candidate for the job. While details are important, it would be most beneficial to stick to points that pertain to the position you’re applying for.

Be up front:

Head off any questions about gaps in employment if you have any. It is best to be forthcoming with prospective employers about any previous situations. In this instance, you can use a functional resume format instead of a chronological. This style highlights your more relevant roles, rather than the most recent. Its important to always be honest about your background while showcasing your unique strengths.
